The Story of the Past: What is History?
Social Studies Textbook Chapter 4-Lesson 1
1. archaeology: The study of history through artifacts, bones, and ruins.
2. artifact: An object people made and used and then left behind.
3. culture: The way of life of a particular group of people.
4. excavate: To remove earth in order to find something buried.
5. history: The story of the past.
6. primary source: Something created by someone who was there at the time; a first-hand account of something that happened (example: journal, diary, photographs, autobiographies, rock art, speeches, etc...).
7. ruin: The remains of an old building.
8. secondary source: Something created by someone who was not there at the time; a second-hand account of something that happened (example: books, biographies, movies, encyclopedias, art, internet sites, etc...).
