October Newsletter

Fall is here! This is what we will be learning in October:

1. Math- We are just starting Unit 3. Unit 3 will include multiplying whole numbers and fractions together and multiplying 2 fractions together. It also includes dividing a whole number by a whole number, a whole number by a unit fraction, and a unit fraction by a whole number.

2. Reading- We have just started our class 40 book reading challenge! Students keep track of books in their reading notebook. Please encourage your child to read at home at least 30 minutes a night.

In each reading group, we are focusing on reading fictional stories and identifying story structure in those stories. We will use a story map to help us practice summarizing a story.

3. Writing- We just finished writing our fictional short story. We are planning out a descriptive essay next. We are using a computer program called Utah Compose to help us edit, revise, and publish our work.

For grammar, we are learning about compound sentences and nouns. We are practicing identifying common and proper nouns and talking about when to capitalize nouns or not. We will also be learning about where commas go in sentences.

4. Social Studies- We are learning about the people that came to North America and started the 13 colonies. We will identify and compare all 13 colonies and study why and how the colonies got started. We will also discuss how the Native Americans were affected by the founding of the colonies.

5. Science- We finished our unit on Matter. We will be studying the Earth's surface next. We will learn what volcanoes, earthquakes, uplift, weathering, and erosion do to reshape Earth's surface.
