Math- A few weeks ago we took a test on Unit 1. We are about halfway through Unit 2, which is on multiplying up to 2 by 2 digits. We are learning several different ways to do these types of problems so students can choose what is best for them.
If students get below 80% on a classroom assignment or test, they are allowed to correct the problems and turn them back in. If I see that the student clearly understands his/her mistake, I will give back half a point for each corrected problem. Please encourage and help your child to do this! We all learn from correcting our mistakes!
2. Reading- We have begun our class 40 book reading challenge! Students keep track of books in their reading notebook. Reading minutes should be written in the Homework Packet each day and totaled at the end of each week. Minutes need to be signed by a parent/guardian to count!
We have learned how to pick books that are a "good fit" for us. We are also working on behaviors while we read to ourselves and others in class. We are building stamina to be able to read for long periods of time without stopping! A list of behaviors is listed on the side of this blog.
3. Writing- We have just finished publishing a descriptive paragraph. We have begun learning what dialogue is and will practice writing dialogue in a fictional story. We are also learning about Word Choice and Sentence Fluency in the 6 Traits of writing.
For grammar, we have been practicing recognizing what a complete sentence is and how to combine sentences to make them compound. We will also learn to recognize a noun and tell the difference between a proper and common noun.
4. Social Studies- We just started a unit on the five native american tribes of Utah: The Utes, Paiutes, Shoshones, Navajos, and Goshutes. We will be learning about the culture and history of each tribe. At the end of our unit, we will be having a "Native American Day" with other classes in the fourth grade.
5. Science- We just finished a unit on the water cycle. We will be studying weather next. This includes learning about the components of weather (wind speed, wind direction, temperature, clouds, cloud cover, precipitation, and air pressure) and how to predict weather, just like a meteorologist would.
