January Newsletter

Welcome back from Christmas Break! I hope you all enjoyed your holidays as much as I did. Here is what we will be working on this month in school:

1. Math: We are finishing up a unit on division this week with a test. Next week, we will begin a new unit on algebraic principles, patterns, and some graphing. Please watch for a letter from your child containing more specific information on how to do some of the math we are learning.

Please encourage your child to redo any work that comes home with "Correct and Return" written on it. I give back points if I see that your child understands the correct way to do the problem(s) missed.

2. Reading: We are continuing our quest to read 40 books by the end of the year. Students should be keeping track of the books they are reading in their reading notebook. They are also doing 2 reading responses in their notebook each week. Please remind them to do at least one Book Commercial (oral presentation) and one Book Review (written) by the next report card time.

3. Writing: We are finishing up writing a fairy tale by making it into a book for the final draft. We are also studying different types of verbs for grammar and how to put voice in our writing.

4. Science: We are finishing up our unit on weather and will be taking a test on it this week. Our next unit will be on the different types of rocks and how to recognize them. Also, we will study soil and what its layers are called.

5. Social Studies: We are starting a unit on mountain men and explorers of Utah next week. We will be learning what they explored and why they were important to Utah's past.
