February Newsletter

Welcome back from being off track! I hope you all enjoyed the time off, but are excited to get busy learning again! Here is what we will be working on this month in each subject:

Reading: Continue having your child read each night for at least 20 minutes. Students were allowed to read a book of their choice for January and write 2 entries in their reading journals on that book. The journals will be due on Wednesday, February 8th, for me to see what they have been reading.

For the month of February, students should chose a historical fiction book to read on their own. This is the book report book for this month. More information on what students need to do for this report will be sent home and posted later on this site. It won't be due until March 2nd.

Please also continue helping your child total the minutes they read at the end of each month for a grade. Also, I would appreciate it if you could write how many DAYS your child read at the end of each month in their planner as well, so I can give them tickets for the Ken Garff "Road to Success" reading program.

Math: We are in the midst of a unit on fractions and decimals. We are learning how to find equivalent fractions, compare fractions, and simplify fractions. We will also be learning about what a decimal is, comparing decimals, how to change decimals into fractions, and fractions into decimals. Please help your child recognize fractions and decimals in their everyday lives.

Social Studies: We are going to learn about the first white men to come to Utah- the explorers and trappers. We will learn who they are, why they came, when they came, and what they discovered.

Science: We have just finished a unit on fossils. Our next unit will be on the water cycle. We will learn what the water cycle is and how it happens. We will also relate the water cycle to weather.

Writing: We will be doing a short unit on poetry. The students will be learning about different types of poems and write an example of each of those types.
