Welcome back on track! We have another busy month again with a guest presenter coming to teach us. Mr. Nance, District Science Specialist, is coming to teach us about fossils. Here is what we will be doing in the rest of the subjects:
Math: We are starting a unit on fractions. We will be focusing on recognizing fractions, simplifying them, finding equivalent fractions, and comparing and ordering them. Please encourage your child to find fractions around them and help them with assignments as needed.
Once again, I wanted to remind you that if your child has taken home math assignments that have "Please Correct and Return" stamped on them, this is because their score on that particular paper was lower than 80%. This means that your child can redo the problems they missed on a separate piece of paper to show that they can do the problems. I will look at it and give them back half the points they missed if the problems are correct.
Reading: Your child should be reading 30 minutes every night of the week, for a total of 150 minutes for an "A" grade on independent reading. Please help your child total these minutes up at the end of each week and sign that they read them. I collect all reading minutes each Monday. Also, please check to make sure your child is reading a book that is on their level of reading. If they are reading a book that is too hard for them, help them choose another one.
Please also keep signing the days, in the planner, that your child reads, so I can help them count up the total days for "Road to Success" reading tickets each month.
The next book report is on a historical fiction book. I have sent out and posted information on what we are doing for the report. Please check an earlier post for that information, or I have extra hard copies of them in class if they are needed. The report is due on February 25th.
Science: We are just starting a unit on rocks, minerals, and soil. We are learning what the difference is between minerals and rocks, how to identify sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, and how each type of rock is formed. We will also learn about the different layers and types of soil and why soil is important. Please encourage your child to look at the rocks and soil around them and try to identify what type they are.
Social Studies: We recently finished up talking about the pioneers and the trek they took to Utah. We will be learning about how they settled Utah next.
Writing: We are finishing up a unit on poems and will be making a class book of poems when they are all finished. Our next genre of writing will be a persuasive paper.
